Our Film Certificate

Our film genre is a Crime/ Drama.

In order to give our film a certificate, I did some research into the current top 5 Crime films on IMDB, the current top 5 are:

Out of these, I then read the storyline, and compared this to our film. I also looked at the age rating or certification of that film and compared that too mine. I then watched the opening to all of the films and looked out for the typical conventions and ideography to compare my film opening to these. This would then help me work out what certificate our film should be.

I also looked at the top 5 films of the genre Drama on IMDB:

I did the same with these films as the ones previous. From this I built up an idea of what generic conventions were in Crime and Dramas. I also looked at the BBFC, and read the different categories and the sort of thing that were allowed in different age ratings. I then looked at the certification of all the films and compared the differences, my main findings were that:

Films that are PG, for instance God's Not Dead, contain no nudity, violence and gore is limited, drug use is limited, or often none. Fairly clean, hence being a PG (Parental Guidance, meaning suitable for general viewing, but some scenes may be unsuitable for young children).

Films that are 12A's, like Noah, contains some nudity and sexual activities, violence and gore is quite full on too. Drug use, smoking and alcohol is limited still. (12A, means contains material that is not generally suitable for children aged under 12. No one younger than 12 may see a 12A film in a cinema unless accompanied by an adult).

Films that are 15's, such as American Hustle more sexual activities can be seen, violence is more intense and in term, profanity's can be heard. Some potential drugs are taken, along with the use of alcohol. (15 means no-one under 15 is allowed to see a 15 film at the cinema or buy/rent a 15 rated video).

Films that are 18's such as The Wolf of Wall Street contains non stop sexual content, lots of nudity and drugs. Quite gory, not only that but it is also very visible to the audience to see. The use of alcohol, drugs and cigarettes are highly used. Profanity's are extremely heavily used. Almost constantly. (Films rated 18 are for adults. No-one under 18 is allowed to see an 18 film at the cinema or buy / rent an 18 rated video).

Conclusion

After reviewing lots of films and considering the BBFC's certification, I would give our film a 12A. This is because in the opening scene, there is no use of profanity's, drug use is none, with a single shot of Xavier smoking a cigar. Also content of an explicit nature cannot be seen throughout either. This therefore means our film opening can classify as a 12A.
